Made For Each Other (Edinburgh Fringe)

Made For Each Other by Monica Bauer and performed by John Fico is my other highlight of this year’s Fringe. I was working at the venue where both of Monica’s shows were performed -she performed a monologue about her young life which was also very good but this is undoubtedly her masterpiece.
Wonderfully performed by such talent! All of us who managed to see it wept with joy and sadness.

Behind the Candelabra (2013)

Paul and I saw the Liberace film. It was great. Brill performances and a great comedy turn from Rob Lowe. Shame it's not on at the cinema in America so it can't win any Oscars, Michael Douglas was great as disgusting old Liberace, what a creep! The part he was born to play baby!!

Le Placard (2001)

Please allow me to now talk about my favourite film of all time. On watching it again, for probably the third time in 12 months (as I always do) I think perhaps it is better than Withnail & I and Some Like it Hot, and has taken over gaining first place in my personal film chart.
The Closet is perfect, it's the right length, it has a Shakespearean plot full of people pretending to be what their not and other people pretending that other people are pretending etc and it has the perfect cast.
Daniel Auteuil is an insignificant nobody, his ex wife and his teenage son aren't interested in him and he is about to get fired. How does he fix this? He pretends to be gay. No, he pretends nothing, he is the same as always, but he lets everyone believe that behind his shy and quiet exterior he is a raving queer. He can't get fired, that's discrimination, but he becomes somehow interesting to everyone all of a sudden, his co-workers, his ex and his son.
It is played beautifully and it is the Malvolio of the piece Gerard Depardieu who brings the most wonderful performance, the homophobic pig forced to be nice to the gay man when he is tricked into thinking his job is in danger, it goes far too far and Depardieu has a breakdown and thinks himself in love with Auteuil, when rejected he goes nuts and ends up in the looney bin.
Brilliant.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

I wish I'd had a comfier seat because this film was long! It was good though, it looked good and it was a good one for keeping your brain going. It took a couple of hours before anything exciting happened though and it was a bit of a sausage-fest. No women apart from Tom Hardy's squeeze but then Tom Hardy was the Bond character in this spy film, Mark Strong was a bit at the beginning as well and I like him.
Anyway, was the book as gay as the film? The bit I enjoyed the most (apart from Tom Hardy being beautiful) was Mark Strong's heartbroken face and those big brown eyes crying at the end, AW! Sausage-fest.

Black Swan (2011)

Think The Red Shoes crossed with The Fly- and Fight Club!
The gore was too much, it was horrific, shudder! The much talked about lesbian scene was boring, I don't understand why it was so talked about. I guess just because they are two beautiful tiny actresses, but surely, women making out is just women making out? I've seen better on the internet...
Anyhoo, above all it made me want to see Swan Lake- and watch The Red Shoes. The Red Shoes could have done with a gay scene, I reckon, Walbrook and Marius Goring. HOT.

Loose Cannons (2010)

Lauren and I went to see this film a few weeks ago, everyone else at the cinema was a gay couple, also everyone else found it hilariously funny. It was the second of january, I can only assume they were all still drunk because we found it ok, but weirdly outdated. Have Italians really only just decided it's ok to be gay? There was a line in the film where one boy said seriously "It's ok for us, it's not 2001 any more," What?! What?! Full of one-dimensional characters, this film did nothing but paint bad stereotypes, gays are camp, women are mentalists, old men are bigots and everyone in Italy is thin. Pah!

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

I can't believe I watched this film for a second time. Yeah, it was a film about gay cowboys, the one and only message being that gay men fall in love, wow, if you didn't know that you must be a dumb American. That's obviously who the target audience was.
Anyway, there's my review. On a totally different note I just want to say that it turns out all my theatre ramblings yesterday were wrong, it has been announced today that The Smoking Diaries a new play based on late playwright Simon Gray's memoirs, currently to be seen only in Chichester (ie outside of London) will soon be moving to London for a West End run.
I remember now (it's nearly 2 am, forgive my addled brain) I wanted to test something. I wrote that I wouldn't be able to see said play yesterday as it's in the middle of nowhere- Chichester- but now I will be able to see it, and I am greatly happy- though also nauseous and struck by nosebleeds and palpitations (I calls it 'love'...). So just a test; I wish Orchard would contact me soon and give me a friggin' job!
Stay here, I'll check my emails...

God damn it!!
